Chicago, IL: Hopkins in Action at Greater Chicago Food Depository

Chicago Volunteer Event
Start Date
End Date

Sponsored by the Hopkins Chicago Alumni Chapter

Join Hopkins alumni and friends to volunteer to repack food at the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

"The Food Depository is part of a united community effort working to bring food, dignity and hope to our Cook County neighbors. We act as the hub for a network of more than 700 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other programs. These programs provide food where it’s most needed. We also address the root causes of hunger. Public benefits outreach and job training programs offer a hand up for our neighbors to overcome poverty."

What do you mean by "repack"?

"In our repack sessions, we focus on putting large quantities of bulk food into packages that individuals and families can use. Projects include repacking bulk products such as pasta or rice to individual/family portions, assembling boxes with assorted food, checking expiration dates, labeling products and gleaning produce. Repack volunteers are not required to do heavy lifting, but should be prepared to stand for 90 minutes at a time with some light lifting and bending, depending on the project."
